The short version: different apps solve different problems. Bloox is a free iOS player for audiobook files you already own (M4B, MP3) with three on-device AI features no other player has: live transcription, character identification, and recap summaries. It is not the best choice for everyone, and this page is honest about who should pick something else.
If you mostly buy from Audible and want the simplest path: stay in the Audible app. If you self-host with Audiobookshelf and need real-time progress sync: use ShelfPlayer or Plappa. Otherwise, Bloox is probably worth a try.

Where Bloox loses (yes, this is on the comparison page)
- iOS 26 required for AI features. If you’re on iOS 16–25, the player works but live transcription, character identification, and recap summaries do not. BookPlayer or Prologue will run on older devices.
- No native Audiobookshelf API sync yet. If you run an ABS server and need real-time progress sync back to the server, ShelfPlayer or Plappa do that today; Bloox does not.
- iOS only. No Android version, no web version. If your household is mixed-platform, you’ll need different apps per device.
- No Apple Watch app yet. Now-playing controls work via the system; a dedicated watch app is on the roadmap.
- Closed source. If your selection criteria require open source, BookPlayer (GPL-3.0) is the closest equivalent feature set without the AI layer.
- Full CarPlay UI is still in progress. Background audio and now-playing controls work; the dedicated CarPlay browse interface is being built.

Pick the right app for your library
Honest recommendations based on how you store and listen.
I buy from Audible and want zero hassle
Stay in the Audible app. It’s the path of least resistance for the Amazon ecosystem.
Pick: AudibleI buy from Audible but want to own my files and try AI features
Use Libation on your Mac, Windows, or Linux machine to download your purchased Audible library as standard M4B files. Drop them in Google Drive or iCloud. Import into Bloox. You’ll get transcription, character lists, and recap summaries on top of books you already own.
Pick: Bloox + LibationI run an Audiobookshelf server at home and want native sync
Use ShelfPlayer or Plappa. They speak the Audiobookshelf API directly: progress, library, downloads, multi-user. Bloox does not yet sync directly with the ABS server — you’d have to sync the underlying files manually.
Pick: ShelfPlayer or PlappaI run Audiobookshelf and also want AI transcription
Use ShelfPlayer/Plappa for daily listening, and Bloox as a secondary “reader” for books where you want transcription or a recap. You’ll need to import the M4B files into Bloox separately for now.
Pick: ShelfPlayer + Bloox as a companionI have a folder of MP3s I ripped from CDs years ago
Drop them in iCloud or Google Drive and import to any of the file-based players. Bloox handles 10+ filename patterns and warns about gaps before they become playback surprises — useful for messy old CD rips. BookPlayer and Prologue are equally good choices for the playback itself.
Pick: Bloox, BookPlayer, or PrologueI listen mostly before bed and fall asleep often
The recap and sleep timer combination is exactly why I built Bloox. Wake up, tap “What Did I Miss?”, get a 30-second spoken catch-up, continue listening.
Pick: BlooxI’m on iOS 18 or older and can’t upgrade
Bloox’s AI features need iOS 26 + Apple Intelligence-capable hardware. On older devices, BookPlayer or Prologue will give you a solid playback experience without the AI layer.
Pick: BookPlayer or PrologueI’m on Android
Bloox is iOS only. On Android, Smart AudioBook Player and Voice Audiobook Player are the most-recommended free players for your own files. For Audiobookshelf users, the official Audiobookshelf Android app is the obvious pick.
